Shetland Fishermen's Association

Shetland Fishermen’s Association promotes the interests of around 80 members, mainly in the political arena: in government and in parliament in Scotland, the United Kingdom and the European Union. It has three sub-committees representing pelagic, white fish and small boat interests, and policy is formulated by an annually-elected executive committee. The chairman and executive officer of the SFA are tasked with ensuring the committees have the advice and information they require to make decisions; they also represent the organisation and advance its policies in a wide range of different settings.

The SFA pursues training opportunities for established and prospective fishers at NAFC Marine Centre in Scalloway and operates a group life assurance scheme on behalf of its members.

The organisation has a well-developed relationship with Shetland Islands Council. Working together on national and European bodies, they are able to demonstrate that changes to regulations can have an impact not only on the industry but on the wider community.

In November 2015 the SFA appointed a policy officer Maria Aira Martin, who had previously worked at the European Council in Brussels. Working closely with the executive officer, Simon Collins, she aims to promote the Shetland fishing industry within the EU institutions that have such a critical say in its future. Between them, the executive officer and the policy officer speak French, Spanish and Italian as well as English.
